The forklift is a very useful tool, whether in a factory, out in the stockyard, or even on construction sites. They are more or less a specialized vehicle with hydraulics in the front to lift 2 forks that push forward. Some can tilt back as well for better hold on their cargo. They are usually used to move cargo loaded on pallets (or skids). The forklift was developed in 1920, and has been a valuable tool for manufacturing and warehousing sites ever since. Types There are several types of forklifts including the counter balance, reach truck, and side loader. The counter balance is the most common. The other 2 are specialized for applications where things are in tight spaces. Control and capability There is a wide range of load capacity as well, though for most warehouse applications, the average would likely be around 5 tons, though where they stock heavier items, much heavier load capacities are available as well. Raising and lowering the forks (and cargo) are only one feature. Many forklifts also tilt backwards to keep the load from falling forward. This also helps operate on non-level surfaces as the forks (and cargo) are less likely to drag on the ground. Some optional features include forks and back support that can be turned or moved side to side to assist better placement of the load. Some also feature hydraulics that can adjust the width between the forks from the driver seat, saving time when many different sized pallets need to be moved. One other forklift change often used in factories is a clamp in addition to the usual forks. These are used to open and close around boxes, cartons, and other special packaging. The main purpose is additional efficiency in their operations. Safety Like most equipment, there are rated limits for forklifts as well. These include the typical GVWR and other ratings. In other words, how much weight the particular forklift can carry. They also specify the forward type center of gravity and other aspects. It’s wise to understand these before operating a forklift for your safety, and those around you. Nearly all forklifts have rear wheel steering. This is one of the most important features in their function. It enables increased forward maneuverability, and cornering around other cargo. They definitely drive a little different, and sometimes, may leave you wishing for the same in your own road vehicle, though at the same time, this can lead to instability at high speeds, which explains why you don’t. One critical characteristic on a forklift that you need to keep on top of is balance. When loaded, everything effects the handling, and your center of gravity will change as you turn, speed up, or slow down. You need to use reasonable speed judgment on turns. Otherwise it may roll over on you, causing injury to anyone near. In the end, before operating a forklift, there is often a certification required to do so. This usually consists of a test on safety, proper operation, and positioning of cargo in general. While it’s not complicated, it can be dangerous if operated carelessly. |
